Having a learning connection from school to home is extremely important. Here are some things you can practice at home with your Kindergarten student to help support their learning in the classroom.
  • Uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Letter sounds
  • Identify sight words
  • Practice reading simple words
  • Review concepts of print (reading left to right, reading from the top of the page to the bottom, title, author, illustrator, etc)
  • Identifying and producing rhyming words
  • Practice days of the week and months of the year
  • Correct letter formation when writing
  • Writing first and last name
  • Stretching out words and listening to the sounds to help spell unfamiliar words
  • Identifying and drawing shapes
  • Counting to 100
  • Counting objects one at a time
  • Identify and create patterns
  • Number writing
  • READ!
Other Ideas
  • Provide your child with as many opportunities as possible to socialize with other children. These social skills will help them be successful in the classroom.
  • Play board games. This is a great way to teach taking turns and to reinforce that the same person can't always win.
  • Reinforce concepts from school as you go about our daily routines at home. Count pairs of socks as you put laundry away, talk about the letter sounds they hear in the names of at-home objects, spray shaving cream on the side of bathtub and have them practice number writing or letter writing.
