Welcome Letter

Dear Second Grade Students and Family,

My name is Alison Winter and you will be in my Second Grade class.  This is my second year teaching Second Grade.  Previously, I taught the English Language Learners program at both Mockingbird and Meadows and in Sixth Grade at Meadows.  I had the opportunity to meet many students at home visits, and I am looking forward to getting to know you and your families throughout the year.

Second grade can be a fun and challenging year for students.  We focus on strengthening reading and writing skills, but we also start learning new content to prepare for Third Grade.  In class, students learn through small group activities to get individualized instruction from the teacher.  We also take in account all the different learning styles, and instruct to meet students' needs.

It is also important to strengthen skills at home in addition to time at school.  We have homework every Friday, and it is due back every Tuesday.  The homework reviews the spelling, math, and reading strategies that we practice throughout the week.  During the week, it is beneficial to set some time aside to practice reading, spelling, and math facts with your student.

I am excited about sharing this school year with you and hope that it will be enjoyable and challenging for all of us.  Most importantly, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Together, we can make this year in Second Grade both valuable and productive.

Ms. Winter
